First held in 1994, T In The Park is Scotland's biggest music festival, and one of Britain's 'majors', along with Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds and Download. The 'T' stands for 'Tennents', the festival's main sponsor, and is usually held in early July, at a disused airfield in Balado, Kinross-shire. From modest beginnings at its original site in Strathclyde Park, Lanarkshire, with acts like Primal Scream, The Chemical Brothers and Oasis, the festival expanded from a two-day event to its present three-day structure in 2007 and, like Glastonbury, attracts a large amount of campers, thanks to the expansive land on which the venue sits. Campers can also buy tickets for the Thursday night prior to the start of the festival, to ensure early arrival. The festival seems to get bigger every year, and now comprises seven stages, which in turn pulls in the bigger names. In 2011, Coldplay, Foo Fighters and Beyonce all appeared, and previous years have seen the likes of Eminem, Muse, R.E.M., Rage Against The Machine and The Verve all taking part.
As well as the music, there are plenty of food and drinks concessions, clothing stalls, and a large fair with the famous Big Wheel, which adds to the family atmosphere, and the sheer number of stages means that it's one of the more popular with larger groups who all want to see their own thing. In recent years, T In The Park has 'shared' its line-up with the Oxegen Festival in Kildare, Ireland, which is held on the same weekend. Just like Reading & Leeds, many acts can be found performing at one gig, before flying over to appear at the other. The addition of the Thursday campers tickets has seen attendance numbers rise sharply since 2008, with an average of 85,000 people attending (with a 60,000 capacity for the campsite alone) and the festival is today seen as a serious contender/alternative to Glastonbury, with many music fans doing both.
The 2012 T In The Park Festival will be held on July 6th-8th, with The Stone Roses announced as one of the headline acts.
