Snow Patrol

Formed at Dundee University in 1994 by Gary Lightbody, Mark McClelland and Michael Morrison, Snow Patrol were slow burners of the UK Indie/Rock scene, undergoing frequent name and personnel changes before emerging as the multi-platinum selling band we know today. After years of playing the pub and club circuits of Scotland and Northern Ireland (frontman and principal songwriter Lightbody is from Bangor), Snow Patrol released two critically-acclaimed, but commercially unsuccessful, albums - Songs For Polar Bears (1998) and When It's All Over We Still Have To Clear Up (2001) - before their breakthrough LP, Final Straw, got them noticed in 2003, with Morrison replaced by Jonny Quinn, and Nathan Connolly taking on lead guitar duties.

Final Straw was nominated for the 2004 Mercury Music Prize (pipped by Franz Ferdinand's eponymous debut album) with the single “Run” peaking at #3 in the UK Singles Chart, giving the band their first taste of mainstream success. Unusually for a relatively unknown British group, the album's US release was also equally successful, and the band went on to support the European dates of U2's Vertigo tour in 2005. Snow Patrol's next album, Eyes Open, was released the same year, with original member McClelland replaced by Paul Wilson. The inclusion of the track “Chasing Cars” in an episode of popular US drama series “Grey's Anatomy”, saw the song climb both the US and UK charts at breakneck speed, and earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Song, with Eyes Open going on to become the UK's bestselling album of 2006.

Snow Patrol's fifth studio album, A Hundred Million Suns (2008) was backed by the sell-out “Take Back The Cities” tour of the UK and Ireland, and spawned the hit singles “Take Back The City” and live favourite “Set The Fire To The Third Bar”. Appearances at Live Earth (2007), various charity concerts, and extensive touring consolidated their status as one of the country's biggest acts and, after a studio hiatus of three years, their sixth album, Fallen Empires, was released to critical acclaim in November 2011, ahead of a 2012 world tour.
