Born in Los Angeles in 1984, Sonny John Moore became lead singer with rock band From First To Last in 2004 and made two albums with them, Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has A Body Count (2004) and Heroine (2006), before problems with his vocal chords and a desire to strike out on his own, saw him leave the group in 2007. He used MySpace to showcase electropop demo tracks, then toured with alternative rock band, Team Sleep, as well as being involved in Alternative Press magazine's 2008 tour; the publication featuring valuable articles about each act that performed, as well as cover shots. It was also in 2008 that Moore began producing, under the now-familiar alias of Skrillex, though he still appeared at clubs around L.A. under his real name.
In 2009, Moore released the EP Gypsyhook, in a very limited edition, which created demand for his recordings, and he toured with various outfits, usually under the name Sonny And The Blood Monkeys. In 2010, Moore released his first EP under the Skrillex name, My Name Is Skrillex, as a free download, as well as providing vocals for records by British metal group, Bring Me The Horizon, and touring with Deadmau5. Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites was his third EP, which was followed by additional tracks on More Monsters And Sprites, and a 2011 tour called Project Blue Book.
Skrillex produced Korn's 2011 release, “Get Up”, which was given away free via Spin magazine's Facebook page, and in July of the same year, he showcased his video for the single “Rock'n'Roll Will Take You To The Mountain” on YouTube. Skrillex formed his own record label, OWSLA, in August 2011, dedicated to promoting other dubstep and electronica acts, some of the first signees being Porter Robinson, who Skrillex had toured with previously, plus Alvin Risk and M Machine.
His vocal and production collaborations continued throughout 2011, with contributions to Knife Party's “Zoology”, the video game “Syndicate”, and Kaskade's album, Fire & Ice. Another EP, Voltage, was announced in November 2011, as were several live UK dates, set for Winter 2012.
