Peter Kay

One of Britain's best-loved comedians, Bolton-born Peter Kay attributes his success to his empathy with 'everyday life', having taken on a number of menial jobs in his youth, most of which inspired his most loveable comedy characters. Leaving school with just one GCSE (in Art), Kay later dropped out of Liverpool Hope University and instead studied Media Performance at Salford, which gave him his first taste of doing stand-up. His experiences working in a garage, cinema, supermarket, cash & carry, and bingo hall, were instrumental in the creation of many of his comedy characters.

Kay began touring comedy clubs all over the North West in the mid-1990s, and was soon invited to perform at the prestigious Comedy Store in London. Winning Channel 4's So You Think You're Funny contest in 1997 led to appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and his own Live At The Top Of The Tower tour, which finally catapulted him to stardom. Kay used frequent chat show slots on Parkinson and Friday Night With Jonathan Ross to build up a fanbase, and it was during this time that he began work on his most famous TV show, Phoenix Nights, in collusion with fellow comedians Dave Spikey and Neil Fitzmaurice. Centred around life in a northern social club (and filmed in Kay's home town of Farnworth), Phoenix Nights introduced the world to wheelchair-bound club proprietor, “Brian Potter”, and dealt with the day-to-day goings on and local rivalries of the northern club scene. An instant success, the show spawned a spin-off show, Max & Paddy's Road To Nowhere, featuring the bouncer characters played by Kay and Paddy McGuinness.

More touring and frequent acting appearances in shows like Coronation Street, Linda Green, Doctor Who and Britain's Got The Pop Factor....plus a number of films including 24 Hour Party People (2002) and Going Off Big Time (2005), have all contributed to installing Kay in the national consciousness. He has released three autobiographies, is often voted near (or at) the top of “Funniest Moments” comedy polls and his 2005 single with Tony Christie, “Is This The Way To Amarillo?”, topped the UK Singles Charts for seven consecutive weeks in 2005.

DVD releases of his stand-up tours, Live At The Bolton Albert Halls (2003), Live At Manchester Arena (2005), and Live – The Tour That Didn't Tour....Tour (2011) have all been bestsellers, and more are planned.
