Named after Michael J. Fox's character in the Back To The Future film franchise, McFly were formed in 2004 by Tom Fletcher, who had been writing songs with fellow boy band member, Busted's James Bourne, for a few years. After meeting Danny Jones, he and Fletcher put an ad in NME and picked Harry Judd and Dougie Poynter to complete their line up and, in 2004 McFly released their first single, “5 Colours In Her Hair”, which went straight to No.1 in the UK, as did their second single, “Obviously”. Their debut album, Room On The 3rd Floor, went double platinum, and they replaced The Beatles as the youngest band to hit the top of the UK album charts with their first album. The group supported friends, Busted, on their 2004 tour, then headlined their own the same year.
Their second album, Wonderland (2005) produced the double A-side “All About You/You've Got A Friend”, another No.1, with all proceeds going to Comic Relief, before they headlined at Live 8 Japan, with Good Charlotte and Bjork. They supported the Wonderland album with an arena tour of the UK, then went to the US to appear in Lindsay Lohan's film, Just My Luck (2006), for which they also contributed to the soundtrack. After another UK No.1, “Please Please/Don't Stop Me Now”, another charity single, this time for the 2006 Sport Relief appeal, McFly released their third studio album, Motion In The Ocean (2006) and toured it towards the end of the same year. In 2007, the group embarked on a 24-date McFly Up Close And Personal Tour, which visited smaller venues not previously covered by their usual arena dates. After another tour, to promote a greatest hits album, McFly left their record label, Island, and set up their own, called Super Records, on which they recorded their fourth studio LP, Radio: ACTIVE, which was given away free in the Mail On Sunday in July 2008. A single, “Do Ya/Stay With Me”, was released in November that year, with proceeds going to Children In Need. After another arena tour at the end of 2008, and some concerts for the Forestry Commission, McFly got their heads down to work on more songs, collaborating with artists like Taio Cruz, The Saturdays and Dallas Austin. Their fifth studio album, Above The Noise, was released in 2010, as well as a “mini-movie”, Nowhere Left To Run, which was made available on DVD in November 2010.
In 2011, the band appeared in their own reality show for Channel 5, called McFly On The Wall, which followed them on tour. In addition, drummer Judd won BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing and Poynter was crowned King of the Jungle in ITV's I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, while the rest of the band went to Wales to work on the sixth studio album. McFly released their own jewellery collection in November 2011, and also confirmed a new arena tour of the UK for Spring 2012.
