John Bishop

One of the country's most popular comedians, John Bishop has been doing stand up since 2000, and has been nominated for most major comedy gongs including So You Think You're Funny, North West Comedian of The Year and the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Awards. Born in Liverpool, now living in Manchester, Bishop previously worked in the safe, but dull, world of pharmaceutical marketing, but decided to pack it all in and make a go of his dream of becoming  a comedian despite the business's notorious insecurity, and having a wife and three kids to support.

Ten years of gigging around the pubs and clubs of the north west and London (plus a stint on Irish telly) paid off when he was invited to be one of the opening acts on an edition of Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow (BBC1) in 2009, before his act at the Edinburgh Festival, Elvis Has Left The Building, was then nominated for an Edinburgh Comedy Award (or “Eddie”). Appearances on Live At The Apollo (BBC1) and 8 Out Of 10 Cats (Channel 4) followed, as did acting stints in Lunch Monkeys (BBC Three) and Skins (Channel 4). He appeared on Celebrity Mastermind in 2010 and was given his own show by the BBC, John Bishop's Britain, which was commissioned for a second series in 2011. Other regular TV appearances include Sky 1's What Do Kids Know? and A League Of Their Own.

An avid supporter of Liverpool F.C. (Bishop was also a semi-professional footballer), he had his own show on the club's TV channel, LFC TV, where he was sent to meet and interview his footballing heroes. Bishop also had his own radio show on Liverpool's Radio City, called Bishop's Sunday Service, where he played requests and chatted to celebrity guests. Bishop appeared in Ken Loach's 2010 film Route Irish, and made his stage debut in 2009, originating the role of Tom in Nicky Allt's comedy play One Night In Istanbul at the Liverpool Empire.

Bishop won the 2010 British Comedy Award for “Best Male Comedy Breakthrough Artist”, and the DVD of his 2009 tour, Elvis Has Left The Building, was the fastest-selling debut stand-up DVD ever in the UK. A subsequent DVD, The Sunshine Tour, and a box set of both, were released in November 2011.
