Frankie Boyle

Always controversial, never dull, Frankie Boyle has made a name for himself on the British stand-up circuit with a characteristically morbid and pessimistic sense of humour, and a penchant for sailing close to the comedy wind. Born and raised in Glasgow (but of Irish descent), Boyle was training to be a teacher when he decided to try his hand at stand-up, and was a hit at Edinburgh's famous Stand Comedy Club, which led him to commit to comedy full-time.

Boyle came to national prominence as a fixture on the BBC2 panel show Mock The Week, where his cutting edge commentary on the political and celebrity issues of the day, frequently drew criticism and gained him valuable (albeit mostly negative) exposure in newspaper opinion columns. He was also a regular contributor to other panel shows 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Argumental, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Have I Got News For You.

In 2007, Boyle went on a 100-date sell-out tour of the UK, then returned to TV with the highly controversial Frankie Boyle's Tramadol Nights for Channel 4, an episode of which included a joke about Katie Price's disabled son, Harvey, and led to the model taking legal action (which she won). Other controversial comments concerning Palestine, the Queen, and sufferers of Down's Syndrome, have all contributed to public polarisation of Boyle's brand of comedy, though his comedy DVDs continue to sell in high numbers, as did his autobiography My Shit Life So Far, published in 2009. His second book, Work! Consume! Die! (2011) also found its way onto the UK bestseller list.

Boyle has been teetotal since he was 26, and lives in Glasgow with his partner, Shereen, and two children.
