Born Elliot Gleave (his initials giving him his stage name) in London in 1982, Example grew up influenced by the music of hip hop and rap acts like Snoop Dogg and Wu Tang Clan. A film student by day, Example began DJ-ing in the evenings and met producer, Rusher, who helped him make a demo album which became “A Pointless Song”.
He produced his own singles, initially, which were picked up by various DJs, including Pete Tong, and he was eventually noticed by The Streets' Mike Skinner, who signed Example to his own label, The Beats. In 2006, he released “Vile” (2006), in response to Lily Allen's radio-friendly hit, “Smile”, and was followed by the album What We Made later that year. The single “You Can't Rap” came out in Spring 2007, backed by “I Don't Want To” and “So Many Roads”. Example's next single, “Me + Mandy”, was released on his own label, All The Chats, and in 2008 he even turned his attentions to stand up comedy, with a slot on The Culture Show, for which he 'trained' for 6 weeks under the tutelage of Richard Herring.
His second album, Won't Go Quietly (2009), gave Example his first UK chart hit, with “Watch The Sun Come Up”, and other singles “Kickstarts” and the title track, both did well, due in part to his increased use of dance beats. He began work on his third album, Playing In The Shadows, at the beginning of 2011, and confirmed it would also be dance-centric. The singles “Changed The Way You Kiss Me” and “Stay Awake” both went to No.1 in the UK singles chart, as did the album itself, and he backed the album with a UK tour in late 2011.
As well as solo work, Example has collaborated with many other artists in the past few years, including work for Professor Green, Tinchy Stryder, Tinie Tempah and Wretch 32. In November 2011, he confirmed an additional arena tour of the UK for Spring 2012, to cover 12 cities, with the tour extending into Europe later in the year
