One of the most talked about girls of 2010, Cher Lloyd shot to fame as a contestant on The X Factor. Walking onstage during the auditions, most people in the audience expected to hear the pretty Malvern schoolgirl sing a pop standard, but instead she launched into a rendition of Keri Hilson's “Turn My Swag On”, which itself was a cover of Soulja Boy's original. The fact that Lloyd added her own dance moves and personality to the performance, impressed the judges and she was voted through to boot camp, and then onto the judges houses. Controversy arose, however, when Lloyd both forgot her words, and claimed to be ill, and so couldn't properly perform in front of mentor Cheryl Cole and guest judge, will.i.am. Nevertheless, Cole chose to put Lloyd through to the live finals, ahead of public favourite, Gamu Nhengu, who herself had performed a perfect audition. The public backlash against the decision carried through the rest of the series, where Cher found herself in the bottom two of the public vote on several occasions, only to be saved by the judges, and eventually being eliminated in the semi final. Cole, too, received a lot of negative publicity for her decision to pick a singer who obviously had not performed when it counted.
Despite this, after The X Factor and The X Factor Tour were over, Lloyd was signed to Simon Cowell's Syco Music, where producer RedOne and songwriter Autumn Rowe were recruited to work on her debut album. Lloyd's first single, “Swagger Jagger” was met with a lukewarm reception by critics, but still went straight to No.1 in the UK charts in August 2011. The second single, “With Ur Love”, with Mike Posner, was released in October, and the album itself, Sticks + Stones, in November, reaching No.4 in the UK album charts.
In November 2011, Lloyd announced dates for her first UK tour, in March and April 2012, with Sticks + Stones planned for a Stateside release at the same time, after Lloyd signed a contract with L.A. Reid at Epic Records in December 2011.
