The oldest Grand Prix in the Formula 1 calendar, this momentous event has had several homes, beginning at Brooklands in 1926, with others including Aintree, Brands Hatch and Silverstone, where it's been held since 1987, and will remain until at least 2026. Donington Park in Leicestershire was actually contracted to host the race from 2010 onwards, but did not manage to secure the required funding, so lost the rights before the contract could even take effect, with Silverstone coming back in to 'steal' this most prized of fixtures.
To 2011, twelve British drivers have won the classic race, including Stirling Moss, Jim Clark, Nigel Mansell and Lewis Hamilton, while Clark and Frenchman Alain Prost hold the record for most wins, with five each. Fernando Alonso holds the record for the fastest lap, and Ferrari are the most successful constructors, winning it an incredible 15 times. The Silverstone course was heavily modified in 2010, in preparation for its new, official status as 'home to the British Grand Prix', and now features an 'Arena' layout which is better for spectators and will hopefully make the course a little faster overall. The race is conducted over 52 laps and a distance of 190.6 miles, and has seen some classic moments, including Nigel Mansell giving fuel-less Ayrton Senna a taxi ride back to the pits in 1991, the track invasion a year later when Mansell completed what was to be his last ever grand prix triumph, and Michael Schumacher's controversial 1998 win. To this day, the British Grand Prix continues to throw us breathtaking races, and is an event every Formula One fan should try and get to at least once.
